Many encounter situations in public or social environments where awareness, confidence, and basic defensive skills can make a significant difference. This proposal outlines a self-defense program titled Empower & Protect: Self-Defense for Young Adults, designed specifically for individuals between the ages of sixteen and twenty-four. The program aims to equip participants with the tools necessary to protect themselves, strengthen their confidence, and promote a sense of empowerment and independence.\n\nThe course will run for six weeks, meeting twice per week for one-hour sessions at a designated community space such as a local recreation hall or school gymnasium. Each session will be taught by a certified self-defense and martial arts instructor who is also trained in CPR and First Aid. The program combines physical training, awareness exercises, and practical strategies for real-life situations. Early sessions focus on fundamental safety principles, body positioning, balance, and movement to help participants understand how to avoid becoming easy targets. As the program progresses, participants will learn how to recognize danger, escape from physical holds such as wrist grabs and chokes, and use their environment to their advantage. Later sessions introduce controlled counter moves, simple striking techniques using hands, elbows, and knees, and the importance of using one’s voice and body language to deter potential threats.\n\nIn addition to physical instruction, the course will emphasize mental preparedness and responsible behavior. Participants will engage in discussions about emotional awareness, legal implications of self-defense, and the importance of conflict de-escalation. The final week will involve realistic scenario-based training that allows individuals to apply what they have learned in a safe, supervised environment. By practicing these skills, students not only improve their physical capability but also develop critical thinking and confidence in high-pressure situations.

\n
What is the problem your idea aims to address?
\n

The problem this idea aims to address is the growing concern for personal safety among younger adults who often lack the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills needed to protect themselves in dangerous or unpredictable situations. Many individuals between the ages of 16 and 24 are entering new environments—such as college campuses, workplaces, and social settings—where they may be more vulnerable to harassment, assault, or other safety threats. Without proper training in self-defense or situational awareness, these young adults may feel unprepared to respond effectively if confronted with danger. The proposed self-defense class seeks to close this gap by empowering participants with the physical techniques, mental preparedness, and confidence needed to stay safe and make informed decisions in real-world scenarios.

\n
Which groups does your idea focus on?
