Bronx Family Literacy Nights

Avatar: Rina Madhani Rina Madhani
Idea Submission for The People's Money:
A community program offering free, fun, and interactive family literacy events across Bronx neighborhoods. Workshops will be held in accessible community sites, including Start Lighthouse’s school-based Literacy Hubs, and are open to all families in the surrounding area. Each event features gamified reading activities, hands-on learning, and visits from nationally recognized and award-winning authors. Families will participate together, discover new books, and take home high-quality, culturally responsive titles to build their home libraries. The project strengthens community bonds, supports family learning, and expands access to joyful reading experiences for children of all ages.
What is the problem your idea aims to address?
Families in the Bronx appreciate having welcoming community spaces where they can come together after work on weeknights and on weekends. While our neighborhoods have wonderful schools and libraries, there are few free literacy programs available during these times when families are most able to participate. This idea aims to expand access to joyful, culturally grounded reading experiences outside of the school day. Through interactive activities, author visits, and take-home books, families can spend meaningful time together, strengthen their home libraries, and deepen their love of reading.
