Learn new skills with ESL Class

Idea Submission for The People's Money:
My proposal is to inspire individuals to pursue the acquisition of a new technical skill—such as carpentry, plumbing, or electrical work—while simultaneously engaging in English language instruction. As participants work toward earning a formal technical certification, they would also attend one or two English classes per week, specifically tailored to the vocabulary and communication needs of their chosen trade. This dual-track approach would enable learners to familiarize themselves with the English terminology for tools, materials, and procedures, thereby enhancing their ability to communicate effectively in professional settings. For those who already possess intermediate or advanced English proficiency, the program would serve as a valuable opportunity to refine their language skills further, deepen their technical understanding, and accelerate their integration into the broader New York workforce and community. By combining hands-on vocational training with contextual language education, this initiative aims to empower individuals with both the practical expertise and linguistic confidence necessary to thrive in their careers and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
What is the problem your idea aims to address?
There are many professionals who struggle to speak or understand English, including individuals who have already trained in a profession but still face language barriers. However, we have the opportunity to change this for future generations who wish to develop a technical skill.
Which groups does your idea focus on? Select all that apply
