What problem would you like to solve?

The lack of access to cultural experiences for disabled New Yorkers.

Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?

New York City is one of the cultural capitals of the world, and our city's arts and culture should be available for the entire public to participate in. Disabled people are part of the public (about 25% of it), and right now, NYC's major theatres, museums, and other cultural centers have significant barriers that make it impossible for disabled New Yorkers to have an equitable and dignified experience at most arts and culture institutions. Engagement in arts and culture is a crucial part of being a member of a society, and disabled people deserve to not be second-class citizens in this regard.

What idea do you have to address the problem?

I would propose funding for arts & culture organizations to advance accessibility initiatives at their organizations. This could include funding for staff professional development, for purchase of technology related to accessibility (such as assistive listening devices or caption screens), for programs for disabled patrons, and more. Different organizations have such unique needs that I would advise against directing the funds towards anything hyper-specific, and instead trust that organizations know best what their communities need.

    Who would that help?

This would help disabled New Yorkers participate more fully in all that the city has to offer. It would also help cultural organizations connect on a deeper level with their communities, strengthening our city overall.

What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?

    Borough: Manhattan
