What is The People's Money?

The People’s Money is a citywide participatory budgeting (PB) process where New Yorkers decide how to spend part of the city’s budget on projects their communities need. This process happens every year and is open to all New Yorkers 11 and older, regardless of immigration or incarceration status.

How does The People’s Money work?

The People's Money consists of four phases and takes two years to complete. The first three phases run in one year, and the last phase, Project Implementation, runs in the second year.

First year:

  • Idea Generation - Share your ideas!

  • Borough Assemblies - Join an assembly and shape the ballot!

  • Voting - Vote on what matters most to you!

Second year:

  • Project Implementation - Where ideas come to life!

The People's Money's 1st Cycle

About this process

What happened during the The People's Money's 1st Cycle?

During The People's Money's 1st Cycle, two participatory processes were run at the same time. In addition to running a borough-based process, the Civic Engagement Commission (CEC) decided to simultaneously run a neighborhood process in 33 neighborhoods. These 33 neighborhoods were identified by the Taskforce on Racial Inclusion and Equity (TRIE) as the most heavily impacted by COVID-19, in addition to communities that have a high percentage of other health and socioeconomic disparities. In order to participate in the equity neighborhood process you had to be a resident of one of the 33 neighborhoods. However, any NYC resident could participate in the borough process.

From September through November of 2022, the CEC and our 82 community partners hosted 523 Idea Generation Workshops across the city through which 12,344 New Yorkers were engaged. In addition to Workshops facilitated by our partner organizations, the CEC also collaborated with the offices of Borough Presidents to host 5 borough-based Idea Generation Workshops. Residents were also able to propose ideas directly here on our online platform: Participate.nyc.gov. In total, New Yorkers submitted 2,023 ideas for the five boroughs and 2,116 ideas for the 33 equity neighborhoods, resulting in 13 borough projects and 33 equity neighborhood projects .
