Essential

Destroy Discipline/ Restorative Justice

Avatar: Community Member Community Member

What problem would you like to solve?

Lack of restorative justice in schools: counselors instead of cops, no jumping to punishment or suspension. Submitted on behalf of Elena from IntegrateNYC.

Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?

A lot of kids suffer the way that punishment works in schools, and it ultimately isn’t effective. We should be trying to help people and listening to them, not making things worse when they’re already struggling.

What idea do you have to address the problem?

By putting more funding / resources towards school counselors and less towards cops / security guards in schools, we could bring the vision of restorative justice to life.

Who would that help?

It would help the students - specifically students of color can be targeted by extreme punishment, so this would help them and possibly disrupt the school to prison pipeline.

What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?

Brooklyn
