Idea Submission for The People's Money:
The Community Food, Wellness & Emergency Support Depot is a unified, community-centered initiative serving families, seniors, and youth across East New York and Brownsville. Led by Agape Food Rescue, in partnership with Family Builds Global and St. Timothy Church, the project provides year-round access to nutritious foods, wellness resources, emergency support, and community strengthening programs. The Depot functions as a multi-service hub, offering: Food Access & Nutrition • Community Choice Pantry Pop-Ups • Healthy Hot Meals distribution days • Mobile Farmers Market providing weekly produce • Nutrition & budget cooking workshops Wellness & Safety Supports • Senior Stay Safe at Home program: wellness calls, safety checks, fall-prevention kits • Hydration & Heat Safety project • Winter Survival Initiative: coats, heaters, blankets, emergency items • Mental Health First Aid training for volunteers Family Stability & Emergency Relief • Emergency Micro-Grant Fund • Baby & New Parent Support Initiative • Mobile Hygiene Depot • Parent Resource Hub (financial literacy, housing rights, parenting skills) Youth Service & Community Leadership • Workforce Development Track (food service, warehousing, OSHA basics) • Youth-led Community Clean-Up Days • Community Preparedness Academy for disaster readiness • Blessing Bags for Police & First Responders The Depot promotes dignity, reduces crisis risk, and builds a resilient ecosystem of support for vulnerable families, disconnected youth, and isolated seniors.
What is the problem your idea aims to address?
East New York and Brownsville face some of NYC’s highest rates of: • Food insecurity • Chronic illness linked to poor nutrition • Senior isolation & safety risks • Youth unemployment & limited leadership opportunities • Family emergencies with no safety net • Lack of access to hygiene supplies & essential goods Residents often require multiple services, but resources are scattered and inaccessible. This idea solves these problems by creating a centralized, trusted community hub that provides: • Nutritious food • Emergency supplies • Senior care • Youth workforce training • Wellness programming • Digital inclusion • Disaster readiness education The Depot strengthens entire households while improving health, safety, and community cohesion.
