Culturally Infused Design in Community Gardens

Avatar: GreenThumb CEC GreenThumb CEC
Idea Submission for The People's Money:
The Bronx is home to people from all over the world, especially an influx of immigrants from Latin America and across the African diaspora. It also has a number of community gardens that are in need of care. We would like to invite students from nearby high schools, like the Bronx International High School, to lead a project to incorporate cultural design and horticulture reflective of migrant communities in community gardens. NYC GreenThumb and DOE staff would work together on this program to support students in creating cultural design projects. Students can explore different pathways: architectural design, landscape and garden planning, plant cultivation, art, and humanities. Through this program, they will develop planning, technical, and research-based skills to support their career exploration. Funding for this project would help us with materials, construction, consulting fees, and more.
What is the problem your idea aims to address?
This program addresses the lack of resources and programming in neighborhood schools, giving career development opportunities to students who need it most. It would help neighborhoods be more welcoming to newcomers, which could comfort immigrants of all ages. It also highlights the need for more members and support in our community gardens, which in turn addresses issues of food insecurity, lack of accessible public green spaces, and mental health.
