Essential

Throughout four deliberation sessions, Assembly Members decided to advance this idea to one of the final borough ballots for New Yorkers to vote on. The idea has been edited by Assembly Members and CEC staff to fit ballot character limits and remove all references to specific institutions and geographies. Here is the final idea title and description as it will appear on the ballot:

Staten Island Food Recovery and Delivery Program

This program would work with existing pantries to pick up unsold, edible food from vendors and deliver it to high-need facilities.

Idea Submission for The People's Money:
This would work alongside the Staten Island Hunger Task Force and coordinate with local supermarkets, grocery stores, and wholesalers to pick up unsold but edible fod and deliver it to food pantries, community fridges, and other high need facilities. A truck could be purchased for delivery and food that has spoiled or is otherwise inedible can go to a local community garden or compost hub. There would be a need for a system of fair and equitable distribution
What is the problem your idea aims to address?
