Idea Submission for The People's Money:
Going Deeper proposes a community-based program that equips women and families emerging from crisis with trauma-informed workforce readiness skills. The program blends practical job development with emotional healing, ensuring participants are prepared to re-enter the workforce with dignity, confidence, and resilience. How It Works • Weekly Circles (Support + Skills): • Small group sessions (10–15 participants) held in community spaces such as libraries, churches, or nonprofit centers. • Each session combines: • Trauma-informed support: guided discussions, peer encouragement, and stress management strategies. • Workforce readiness training: resume building, interview practice, digital literacy, and workplace communication skills. • Starter Kits for Success: • Participants receive a “Workforce Readiness Starter Kit” including essentials like notebooks, pens, hygiene items, and professional attire vouchers. • Kits are funded through donations and partnerships with local businesses, not city staffing or new laws. • Community Mentorship: • Volunteer mentors (local professionals, small business owners, retired workers) provide one-on-one coaching. • Mentorship focuses on practical career pathways, entrepreneurship basics, and navigating workplace challenges. • Respectful & Inclusive Design: • Sessions are open to all New Yorkers regardless of background, immigration status, or faith. • Materials are bilingual (English/Spanish) to ensure accessibility in diverse communities like the Bronx. Community Problem Addressed Many women and families in the Bronx face barriers to employment after trauma, including lack of confidence, limited resources, and absence of supportive networks. This program: • Reduces unemployment by preparing participants for jobs without requiring new city staff. • Strengthens community resilience by combining healing with skill-building. • Provides immediate, practical tools for participants to succeed. Implementation Details • Location: Partner with existing community centers (no new construction required). • Staffing: Facilitated by Going Deeper LLC staff and trained volunteers; no reliance on city employees. • Funding: Supported through grants, donations, and partnerships with local businesses (e.g., clothing stores, print shops). • Evaluation: Success measured by participant surveys, number of resumes completed, interviews secured, and jobs obtained. Respect for Rights The program is voluntary, inclusive, and designed to uphold dignity. It does not discriminate based on race, gender, religion, or immigration status. It empowers participants to exercise their right to economic opportunity and self-sufficiency. ✨ In short: Healing Through Work is a service program that blends trauma-informed care with workforce readiness, requires no new city laws or staff, and provides clear, respectful, and detailed steps for implementation.
What is the problem your idea aims to address?
Many women and families in the Bronx and across New York City face barriers to employment after experiencing trauma or crisis. These barriers include: • Lack of confidence and emotional support to re-enter the workforce. • Limited access to practical job readiness tools such as resumes, interview preparation, and digital literacy. • Few safe, community-based spaces where healing and skill-building happen together. • Insufficient resources like professional attire, hygiene items, and mentorship to help participants transition successfully into jobs. As a result, individuals remain underemployed or unemployed, which perpetuates cycles of poverty, instability, and diminished community resilience.
