A week-long loan lets people understand whether a bike truly works for their life.\n\nThe Bike Library would include:\n\n• A small fleet of 10–20 e-bikes and cargo bikes (and perhaps trikes)\n• A reservation and tracking system\n• Orientation sessions on safe riding, rules of the road, and secure locking\n• Maintenance support through local bike shops and youth bike programs like recycle a bicycle\n• Multi-lingual materials for communities with limited English access\n\nBy making “try before you buy” possible, this program expands transportation options, reduces costs for families, and builds safer, more connected neighborhoods.

\n
What is the problem your idea aims to address?
\n

New Yorkers want safe, affordable, climate-friendly alternatives to cars and Uber, but most cannot test real e-bikes or cargo bikes long enough to understand whether they meet their needs. \n\nBike shops allow only short test rides, which do not help someone understand their commute, school-drop-off routine, or how to carry children, groceries, or work equipment. Without access to longer trials, many residents never get to experience a bike as a real transportation option.\n\n\nResidents remain dependent on expensive or inaccessible transportation; traffic and congestion worsen; and families who could replace car trips never get the chance.\n\nThe Bike Library solves this by providing a free, low-barrier, week-long trial, making sustainable mobility realistic and accessible across neighborhoods.

\n
Which groups does your idea focus on?
