Essential

Chipping bicyles and scooters so that existing traffic laws can be enforced

Avatar: Community Member Community Member

What problem would you like to solve?

Many bike/scooter riders ignore traffic rules and as a result, menace pedestrians.

Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?

Not everyone rides a bike or scooter, but everyone walks. It's relevant to every community.

What idea do you have to address the problem?

If every bicycle and scooter (electronic or otherwise) was chipped, and there were chip readers at least on the avenues, riders would know that if they ran over someone, they'd likely be caught. Alternatively, improving security cameras' acuity and their coverage could also help, especially on the avenues. Key issues overall are riders that run red lights, especially when riding *against* the flow of traffic; also that ride on the sidewalks.

Who would that help?

Pedestrians, especially the less mobile ones--very old or very young, or disabled.

What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?

Manhattan
