Essential

Mulan-Theatrical, by Local Chinese J/HS Students

Avatar: Official proposal Official proposal

What problem would you like to solve?

Fill the equity gap with regards to opportunity, training, confidence, assimilation, and careers in the performing arts for Chinese-American students. And raise awareness and appreciation for Chinese culture, legends, values, and arts. Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?

While schools conduct regular or annual performances, to-date, there is a lack of (or no) Asian-themed or dedicated shows. Offering a production about MULAN not only showcases a Chinese-national treasure and character-education, but also provides a stage to recruit and train a mostly or broad Asian cast and crew, and opportunity for real-world coaching and exposure in the performing arts and to be front-and-center.

This, and the supporting budget, would also open an opportunity to engage Disney Theatrical Licensing to consider and develop the first-ever version of “MULAN Theatrical.” Thereby adding more real-world professionalism to the production.

The final production can be performed in the students’ own school, and travel to other schools and stages at nearby communities. The local showcases would be extremely relevant to the Chinese community and generate immerse pride. And raise awareness and appreciation for Chinese culture, people, children, heroes, values, and artistic beauty – especially important now, with widespread misunderstanding or aggression against Asians.

What idea do you have to address the problem?

Organize and aid a local school production of “MULAN Theatrical,” including invite Disney Theatrical Licensing’s participation, and other professionals or Asian celebrities to support the effort and/or train students.

Who would that help?

This project not only helps the Chinese/Asian community and students, but would also delight, enlighten, educate people of all ages (youth through seniors) and backgrounds, New Yorkers, plus national/social/broadcast media.

What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?

Manhattan and Staten Island
