Propagate Endangered Native Plants and Pollinators
- Idea Submission for The People's Money:
- Distribute seeds of endangered or threatened plants and plants that aid indigenous endangered or threatened pollinators to a variety of agencies and organizations to plant in public spaces. If possible, seed selection might be chosen based on local environmental context and/or neighborhood, highlighting the history of the local community or relevant minority groups. If budget allows, include a small placque that labels the species with a short summary of its cultural context. For a concrete example, seeds thematically linked to Mexican-American or LGBTQIA+ heritage (milkweed butterfly flower that attracts monarch butterflies traveling between NY and Mexico; viola rafinesquei, viola brittoniana or other imperiled violets with connection to LGBTQIA+ history; indigenous trilliums, featured on the bisexual flag of Mexico; or other plants) could be allocated to the Manuel de Dios Unanue Triangle or other soiled locations nearby the Lorena Borjas Way in Queens.
- What is the problem your idea aims to address?
- Currently, squares around NYC feature grass or trees, as is conventional. This proposal would promote environmental health by increasing the propagation of threatened plant species and pollinator species, promote cultural diversity and history, and also expand awareness of both cultural and environmental factors while also beautifying the city.
