Describe the challenge you want to address:

As a resident of Jamaica, I witness firsthand the troubling challenges our neighborhood faces daily. Crime and illegal activities, such as drug use, loitering, and harassment by individuals under the influence, have become all too common. These issues not only disrupt the peace but also pose serious safety concerns for all residents, particularly our children.

It’s heartbreaking to see used syringes discarded near apartment doorsteps, where children often play. These sights send a damaging message to the younger generation, making it harder for them to distinguish between what is normal and what is harmful. If this is the environment they grow up in, how can they aspire to something better?

The time for change is now. We need initiatives that will restore our community’s safety and pride. By investing in targeted solutions—such as better lighting, increased security patrols, community outreach programs, and designated spaces for children to play safely—we can address these pressing issues. Let’s create a neighborhood where children can walk to school without fear, where families can feel safe, and where the cycle of crime is broken.

Together, we can transform our community into a place we’re all proud to call home. Let’s allocate the resources needed to fix these problems and give our neighborhood the future it deserves.

What is the solution to the challenge?

As a resident of Jamaica, I see the devastating impact of crime and illegal activities in our community every day. One of the most concerning areas is 173rd Street, where drug use, loitering, and harassment have become alarmingly common. This not only endangers residents but also sets a harmful example for the children growing up here.

To address these issues effectively, I propose active policing and the installation of surveillance cameras in the most crime-affected areas. Active police presence in hotspots like 173rd Street will deter illegal activity and ensure a safer environment for residents. Additionally, strategically placing surveillance cameras will help monitor and address loitering, drug use, and other criminal behaviors.

I suggest installing four cameras at key locations:

173-02 Jamaica
173-09 Jamaica
172-27 Jamaica
92-06 173 Jamaica
Furthermore, cameras should be scattered along Jamaica Avenue, covering the stretch from 173rd Street to other high-risk areas. This comprehensive surveillance system will ensure that criminals have no alternative spots to relocate to once these measures are implemented.

It’s time for a real change. By investing in these safety measures, we can create a secure and thriving community. Let’s work together to build a neighborhood where families feel safe, children can walk freely, and illegal activities are no longer tolerated.
