That's at least 146,000 public school students in NYC that did not have permanent housing at some point during the past school year. According to the Advocates for Children of New York's 2023-24 report on Student Homelessness, the Bronx ranks the highest of all boroughs for student homelessness. Public School District 7, which includes Mott Haven in the South Bronx, ranks among the highest public school districts in the city for student homelessness with an estimated 10-15% of students being homeless. These numbers are important because housing insecurity is often tied to poverty and food insecurity. \n\nAccording to a 2024 analysis from the NYC Council on food insecurity, Mott Haven ranks gid://development-app/Decidim::Hashtag/87/8 out of all neighborhood tabulation areas (NTAs) in NYC for food hunger with 31.4% of residents in the community being food insecure. 46% of people in Bronx Community District 1, which includes Mott Haven, receive SNAP benefits. In other words, food insecurity is a significant issues in the community and is hampering families stability and well-being. \n\n</div></dd><dt name=\"textarea-1727191235485-0\">What is the solution to the challenge?</dt><dd id=\"textarea-1727191235485-0\" name=\"textarea\">\n\n<div>South Bronx Unite (https://www.southbronxunite.org/) proposes a free breakfast program for Mott Haven children to supply families with additional healthier food options in the neighborhood. In addition to that, the program could hire local neighborhood residents, including youth, to learn how to cook and prep nutritious meals, skills they can carry with them for the rest of their lives. Bronx Community District 1 ranks among the highest of all 59 community districts for childhood obesity, so education and learning how to cook healthy food is crucial.
