Describe the challenge you want to address:
Hello, my name is Ms. Philesha Morris, and I am the Community Associate (NYC DOE) at Collegiate Institute for Math and Science, the high school located at 925 Astor Avenue in the Williambridge/Pelham Parkway section of The Bronx. We are located in the Christopher Columbus Campus. There are five (5) schools occupying Christopher Columbus Campus. At least three (3) of these schools utilize the 4th Floor Gymnasium. This gymnasium does NOT have Air Conditioning. My school has 500+ students, which is the highest student population in the building. Another school has 350+ students, and another school has 400+ students. That is a minimum of 1,250 students plus staff utilizing the gym without Air Conditioning. The gym is also utilized for After School Activities like basketball and various other activities . With my school, Collegiate Institute for Math and Science, it is a major challenge to get the students to attend their Physical Education classes in the gym. The complaint from our students is that the gym is TOO HOT! Some of the students have gym for the first period of the day. Other students have that class later on. Regardless, they do not wish to participate in gym classes in that gym due to lack of air conditioning. Also, there is NO seating in the gym. Those who get overheated, or want to catch a breather, have nowhere to sit. I am sure that the other schools have the same problem. Without Air Conditioning and seating in the gym, our school communities will continue to be impacted. Students will continue to fail PE , and have to resort to taking Physical Education in Summer School when it is even hotter!
What is the solution to the challenge?
The solution to this challenge is to have Air Conditioning and seating installed in the 4th Gymnasium of Christopher Columbus Campus. It will greatly improve our students’ attendance and participation in their Physical Education classes. Our school communities serve a majority of low income families with minority students. Our job is to provide them with the best opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed. Physical Education is a requirement for Graduation. Without receiving credit for PE, they will not graduate . My school certainly struggles with this issue. I am certain that fulfilling this need will not only help my school greatly, but the other schools as well. We would be serving the needs of a minimum of 1,250 students and staff. Please assist us with this request. We would be extremely grateful. Thank you.
