Essential

Expanded Textile Recycling

In which borough should your idea take place?
Manhattan
Do you have a specific neighborhood(s) in mind?
All
Describe the challenge you want to address:
Every year New Yorkers throw out around 200,000 tons of textiles which harms our environment. Unfortunately, this often feels like the only option as there is no easy way to dispose of textiles, especially pillows, linens, and rugs as the small number of textile recycling options do not accept these.
Describe your idea and approach to address the challenge:
Expand textile recycling options across the city and all boroughs. Partner with GrowNyc to expand their textile recycling locations (currently there’s a limited number usually open 1 day a week from 9 am-1 PM which is not accessible). Partner with businesses or use city buildings to have drop off bins/lockers for the textile recycling and have these places accept pillows, textiles, etc. Offer textile recycling at the different sanitation fairs that accept chemicals and electronics. People want to do the right thing and dispose of their waste properly but they do not have enough options or the options are prohibitive.
Write the zipcode that best represents your New York City community:
10010
