Urban Heat Island Effect Study

Avatar: Community Member Community Member

What problem would you like to solve?

Disproportionate effect of climate change (heat waves) on neighborhoods that lack green space, shade coverage or are near polluting industries that exacerbate the effects of climate change.

Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?

The impact of climate change is only getting more devastating, often impacting low-income and communities of color the most. This would help illuminate the disparity in how urban heat island effect impacts different neighborhoods and communities so we can understand where support is most needed.

What idea do you have to address the problem?

Longitudinal temperature and air quality study during the summer months across the borough to understand where the problem is most prominent.

Who would that help?

Communities who are most and disproportionately affected by climate change.

What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?

Brooklyn
