LaGuardia Community College/SYEP -Youth mental health (virtual) meetings and youth community activism.
Organization: Research Foundation / LaGuardia Community College/SYEP
Project Name: LaGuardia Community College/SYEP -Youth mental health (virtual) meetings and youth community activism
Project ID: 178
Neighborhood/Communities that the project will serve: CB Queens 12 (Jamaica/ St. Albans), Citywide
Borough: Queens, Citywide
Project Description: LaGuardia Community College(LAGCC) weekly wellness discussions, led by youth and facilitated by college staff, to encourage youth to participate in online local Community Board (CB) Youth committee meetings. Wellness meetings will be held to discuss participant's wellness, their community board advocacy and teamwork.
Community involvement and youth wellness meetings will help youth get involved in their community and could possibly give youth participants a sense of value and feel less isolated. Introduction to Community Boards helps youth to understand the government better and how it works. Knowledge and understanding the government will benefit the youth with community experiences and this experience could possibly be used for future employment and/or employment references.
Youth voters should pick this wellness/community board project because it will get more youth involved with NYC community boards and their community decision making powers. Youth will receive a participation letter from our college. Youth will have community board experience for their resume, and there will be additional incentives and/or supplies given to youth participants.
What Youth are saying about the organization: Past Participants enjoy working with LAGCC/SYEP. That is the reason many youth return to our programs every year. We accept all youth and we are a multicultural institution and we are very proud of our welcoming reputation.
