Organization: Mosholu-Montefiore Community Center

Project Name: Why Not Us? Make Change Happen

Project ID: 139

Neighborhood/Communities that the project will serve: CB Manhattan 10 (Central Harlem),CB Manhattan 11 (East Harlem),CB Bronx 07 (Bedford Park),CB Bronx 08 (Riverdale),CB Bronx 12 (Williamsbridge)

Borough: Manhattan, Bronx

Project Description: Young people ages 14-19 will work in teams to address issues that concern them --like racial inequity, the criminal justice system, immigration, voter participation, or other topics of their choosing. They will hold “town halls,” reach out to their communities, and collaborate with elected officials to come up with concrete solutions and promote actual policy changes.

Young people will become involved in sculpting and changing their community, where their visions, ideas. and demands for their future will be realized and celebrated. We will support young people in leading the charge to promote positive change in their own communities and throughout the city, being at the forefront by making their voices heard, and advocating for an equal and just world.

We are committed to championing tomorrow’s leaders and giving them the tools to pursue and advocate for their communities’ dreams. We will facilitate connections and activities through online platforms and, hopefully, in person; help with preparing town halls and community events; and assist with reaching out to elected officials, including – if the public health situation allows it – trips to City Hall and Albany.

What Youth are saying about the organization: The young people we work with appreciate that they are respected and supported by other peers and positive adults who reflect their own communities and know about their issues first-hand. They value our mentor model that is built on empowering youth by building their inherent strengths and motivating them to overcome obstacles.

Why is the most important question that people are scared to ask.... so together let’s encourage our youth to ask why so they have no reasons to ask why not
