Do you have specific Neighborhood(s) in mind?
    Richmond County
Which group(s) does your idea focus on? Select as many as apply.
    Limited English Speakers
    Immigrants/ Migrants
Describe the challenge you want to address:
I teach ESL using the We Speak NYC materials at the College of Staten Island. My students often do not have English speakers at home, and do not know people to practice speaking English with outside the classroom. Lacking a context to practice using English slows their progress considerably.
What is the solution to the challenge?
I'd like to set up a Conversation Club in my community for immigrants and limited English speakers to practice using English. This club would take place 2 to 3 times a week in one of our buildings. English Learners could sign up for free one-on-one conversations with native speakers of English living in our community of roughly 60 people. I would provide starter conversation topics or short articles tailored to non-native speakers of English, if needed. Making this work might mean the city provides compensation for me to organize these regular events and also to compensate community members who offer their time as conversation partners.
