Describe the challenge you want to address:

To improve the consciousness of the role our community played in the history here in NYC of the reality and pervasiveness of the Abolitionist Movement and the Underground Railroad in the struggle for freedom from chattel slavery prior to the Civil War

Describe your idea and approach to address the challenge:

We know that many freedom seeking black people (including Frederick Douglass) escaped to freedom by crossing the lower Hudson River into downtown Manhattan and then connecting with the Underground Railroad here. With research it could ascertain approximately who and how many did escape.- this research project would be groundbreaking in it's endeavour to answer those questions.
