Inequitable Funding of Youth Programs

What problem would you like to solve?

Equitable resource allocation. Education and educational programs for the youth are underfunded in many parts of Brooklyn and NYC, but some schools are overfunded, and I feel like the balance is not okay. Submitted on behalf of Natalhia and Veronica from IntegrateNYC.

Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?

This is important to solve because children should not be growing up with no programs or bad curriculums or anything like that. Since the youth are the new generation, I feel like it is important to educate them and give them the facilities and resources they need to become strong leaders. Also, all NYC schools look different in terms of representation and resources, but representation often has a large influence on school funding and resources. So schools with more affluent students (typically PWIs) will get more funding and better resources, especially from the PTA than schools that have FRL students (typically Latinx and Black populated schools.)

What idea do you have to address the problem?

Change the public funding and put more funding into education and youth programs. There should be more city based school funding, so schools who typically don't get large PTA funding will get the same money as those that typically get large amounts of money from the PTA. Something like this where money is evenly split around the city instead of just in one school will be more equitable.
