Organization Name: Global Kids, Inc.

Project ID: 160

Project Name: You(th) Got the Power

Neighborhood Communities that the Project will Serve:Citywide,CB Brooklyn 17 (East Flatbush),CB Brooklyn 18 (Canarsie),CB Brooklyn 04 (Bushwick),CB Brooklyn 03 (Bedstuy)

Borough:Citywide

Project Description: Twenty youth leaders will receive a stipend to help plan and execute a series of events in Spring 2021, focused on the three priority areas of mental health, college and career planning, and youth leadership/civic engagement. Events will include outdoor fun like hiking or a drum circle, online college and career preparation for younger students, and virtual forums for planning civic action on issues youth care the most about.

Global Kid's initiative will not only establish new skills and provide wellness opportunities for participants, but will also offer youth leaders the opportunity to develop their leadership, event planning, and mentoring skills, while receiving a stipend for their efforts. We will also have raffle items and gift cards as incentives for youth to participate.

Global Kids puts youth front and center in all that we do, from developing curriculum and programs, to conducting peer-to-peer outreach, to representing GK at important local and global events. This project will allow young people to empower and lift each other up during an extremely difficult time, making sure youth voices are heard and most importantly, listened to.

Global Kids works with twenty middle and high schools throughout NYC, including the High School for Global Citizenship in East Flatbush and High School for Medical Professions in Canarsie, and will work to recruit students from these sites to participate as both youth leaders and event attendees. Our outdoor activities will take place at Prospect Park in Brooklyn, which will allow for attendees from many of the target neighborhoods, including Bushwick, Canarsie, East Flatbush, Sunset Park, and Bedford Stuyvesant, among others.

What Youth are saying about the organization:

I joined Global Kids in my second month of being in an American high school, and the support and advice I've gotten from Global Kids has been invaluable to me graduating. I've made so many meaningful connections with people around me in school and outside through Global Kids, and I've been able to explore my personal interests in activism - from signing petitions, to meeting council members and senators, going to conferences abroad, and going to rallies. All of these experiences and the knowledge that GK has given me have made an impact on my life. I honestly wouldn't be the person I am right now without Global Kids.
