Building Success for High School Students

Avatar: Community Partner Community Partner Project underway

Learn more about this project in the video below!

  • Original Idea Voted on by New Yorkers: This after-school program for high school students would provide education and workforce development to young people from underserved communities to reduce barriers and improve their chances for success.

  • Implementing Organization: United Activities Unlimited

  • Funding Amount: $180,000

The responses below are directly from the community organizations selected to implement The People’s Money projects.

How does your organization plan to bring this idea to life?

Students will attend workshops online and in-person at UAU's Workforce Development Office on Staten Island. These workshops will help students explore career opportunities, navigate the college admissions process, and create post-secondary plans. UAU will also coordinate trips, mentoring opportunities, and case management sessions.

What motivated your organization to apply to implement this idea?

UAU has more than twenty years of successful experience providing workforce development services to young people in New York City. Workforce development is more than connecting young people to employers – we believe it includes helping young people learn about themselves, explore new opportunities, and develop foundational interpersonal skills.

How do you think this project will make a difference in your community?

Many young people do not receive the one-on-one support needed to successfully transition from high school to post-secondary life. When students are provided with access to information, guidance, and a strong support system they can strategically plan their future and pursue their dreams.

List at least one thing you're excited about related to this project!

UAU is looking forward to building meaningful relationships with young people in our community and helping them reach their full potential. We are excited to support students as they complete their high school experience and enter adulthood.

How can someone participate or stay up to date on the project?

High school juniors who are interested in our program can fill out our interest form. They will then be invited to an intake appointment at our office if they are eligible to participate.
