Essential

Language Justice on the the Subway

Avatar: Community Partner Community Partner

What problem would you like to solve?

When subway conductors make announcements about trains switching lines, delays, and instructions to go to different stops to get the train you need, those announcements are only in English.

Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?

Many immigrant workers cannot understand these announcements and can get lost or end up at the wrong location, and that can impact our livelihood if we are late for work or to pick up our children from school because of that

What idea do you have to address the problem?

Create a program to immediately interpret those announcements into commonly spoken languages in NYC

Who would that help?

All immigrant workers

What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?

All boroughs
