Essential

Need traffic signals where there are only stop signs now

Avatar: Official proposal Official proposal

What problem would you like to solve?

Two intersections--Tiemann Place and Riverside Drive and Tiemann Place and Claremont Avenue--are very dangerous for pedestrians. Both have only stop signs, which are typically ignored by drivers.

Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?

Many people, myself included, have reported being very nearly hit by drivers who come within a foot or two of people trying to cross. That no one has yet been killed is because most pedestrians here are locals; we know better than to try to cross when we see a car coming from any direction. Part of the problem is due to very poor design and planning on part of the departments responsible for traffic.

Another serious issue is bike riders who use the sidewalks with impunity. We are on a steep hill, going north and east on Tiemann. The riders are mostly, but not exclusively, deliverers on e-bikes, tearing down the hill at great speed. The risks to children and the elderly is especially serious. No one living in the area has ever seen a police office stop and ticket them.

What idea do you have to address the problem?

The stop sign and crossing on the north side of Tiemann and Riverside are in the wrong place. Drivers coming south on Riverside have to go at least through the crosswalk in order to see if another car is coming west on Tiemann. Cars are permitted to park too far into crosswalks, making it impossible for on-coming traffic to see any other drivers. Stop sign are obliterated by over-grown trees. A re-design of the cross walks and installation of traffic lights would go a long way toward protecting pedestrians. Note, too, that the police never ticket cars violating the stop signs or speed limit. We have often seen police vehicles, not in pursuit (no lights or sirens), driving through the intersections.
