Community Work Opportunities for Young Adults without College Degree
- What is your idea?
- Pilot a program to provide young adults, specifically recent high school graduates who are unable or questioning whether or not to attend a university, with opportunities working with selected nonprofits across the borough. A facilitating organization would place selected partipating non-profit organizations in need of part-time/seasonal entry-level staff. The facilitating organization should also provide other professional development training opportunities and career guidance.
- What problem is your idea trying to solve?
- Not too long ago, New York State announced their new Empire State Service Corp fellowship, to provide college students with state-funded work opportunities at local, and often understaffed, nonprofit organizations. This idea aims to address two problems: underemployment among young adults and staffing storages across the nonprofit sector. College is often costly for any student. However, going to college can be an especially hard decision if you are uncertain of your future opportunity to be employed. Nonprofit work, particularly entry-level case management careers, are notorious for small starting salaries. Providing young people with career-oriented work opportunities can open a lot of doors (e.g., scholarships, internships, etc.).
- Which group(s) does your idea focus on?
- Youth (under 24)
