Describe the challenge you want to address:
Poppin, Breakin, UpRockin, Lockin, New Jack Swing, the Harlem Shake House, Voguing are all homegrown dance styles but the history and culture is barely recognized in NYC. The dancers who innovated these global trends are almost invisible to the world. It is time to shed light on a community that keeps everyone moving and engaging in person to person exchange locally and Globally. Our residents should know our shared accomplishments and the good that emerges from NYC streets. We only hear about the bad players.
Describe your idea and approach to address the challenge:
It is time to uplift the local Dance trends that impacted the world and the dancers that created this new Genre since the 70s. Rappers and DJs have always been prominent due to the massive record industry push for consumers to buy the songs. Dancers are usually placed in a background and anonymous position during concerts films or music videos
Many of the dancers have made a mark on the community and have not been recognized. Let's have these dancers get paid for a one time performance and receive a NYC Classic Hip hop DANCE award for being innovative and vibrant. Many dancers become teachers, so let's award Street and Club dance teachers from the local scenes too. Dance is healthy and isn't just for the young. I am a 52 year old dancer that is still sought after and paying my bills through Dance recently performing at the Guggenheim and the MET museum. I feel it's time to give our NYC Hip Hop and Club dance legends their flowers.
