City Staff Ideas Challenge
#nycspeaks2022 Share your ideas for bold actions the Mayor should take
City Staff - Participate in the NYC Speaks Ideas Challenge!
Dear City Employee,
Thank you to everyone who supported the first phase of NYC Speaks, the largest policy survey ever to be completed in NYC! With your support, we received 62,000 responses - of which a remarkable 16,000 responses came from City workers. After successfully completing Phase 1 of the initiative, we are excited to roll out phase 2: Community Conversations and the City Staff Ideas Challenge.
As City employees, you have unique expertise on how our government can help NYC communities thrive. We want to hear your best and brightest ideas for actions the new administration can take in each of the issue areas covered in the survey. Semi-finalists will be determined by a committee based on the criteria identified on the challenge site, with the potential for winning idea(s) to also get picked up as pilots or new/improved programs.
Here’s how you can ensure your voice is heard:
- Create an Account: Go to participate.nyc.gov/ and click “Login in with NYC.ID” under the create an account button on the top right corner. Go here for more detailed directions.
- Participate: Share your ideas, comment on ideas from your coworkers, and up-vote the ideas you like best between April 18th - May 1st at nycspeaks.org/ideas.
- Vote: Semi-finalists will be announced in early May and will be invited to flesh out their proposals further with assistance from the Civic Service Design Studio. All City staff will have the opportunity to vote on the winning idea later in May.
Please send any questions to participate@civicengagement.nyc.gov.Thank you for everything you do for our city!
In Partnership,
Sheena Wright
Deputy Mayor for Strategic Initiatives

The City Staff Ideas Challenge was originally on track to announce a winner on 6/6/22. It is 7/1/22 and we are still on phase 2 of 5. Is there any update as to when the semi-finalists will be selected? (Previously the Process Phases indicator had been set to stage 3, semi-finalist proposals, but I assume that was not reflective of the actual stage.) We've also noticed that Endorsements were removed, which is unfortunate as they were a way to participate without having to comment on or follow a proposal (staff are even still encouraged to participate in this manner - see the reference to "up-vote the ideas you like best" above). Removing Endorsements has silenced the majority of worker participation in this challenge.
Additionally, the challenge has been left open for so long without official response that many pages are getting clogged with spam comments; were Endorsements still available, they would be a more meaningful way to sort through the most popular ideas without having to sort by most-commented, which at this point also reflects which posts got hit by spam comments the hardest. Can moderators remove these spam comments and reinstate Endorsements, or provide an explanation for why Endorsements were removed? Can Strategic Initiatives give us an updated timeline, and let city employees know that they are still welcome to participate in this challenge if the timeline is extended?
