#nycspeaks2022 Share your ideas for bold actions the Mayor should take
I am a speech pathologist in District 10 in the Bronx. I have experience with students from K-12. I have worked with students in upper grades who cannot read. This is not due to lack of effort. These bright students with language and learning disabilities do not have an accessible program to learn to read once they reach the upper grades. I would like to see every school have a program where learning to read can be accessed by all students at every grade level.

I teach public high school and this is absolutely a problem. I am constantly told that our students who have low literacy (or NO literacy) cannot take a reading program because it will not earn them any credits. So they take ELA/English and fail, or barely pass...and continue to not be able to read. Many graduate still never having learned basic reading skills.
