Fix grading and drainage at intersections
Targeted Agency:
DOT
Project Name:
Fix grading and drainage at intersections
Description:
Many street intersections are improperly graded and tend to accumulate water when it rains or when snow melts. Proper slopes are essential to ensuring that water drains away quickly. These pools often tend to form at cut curbs.
Need:
Nobody likes stepping in a puddle of dirty water (except my two year old toddler), but pools of water at cut curbs are particularly disruptive to people in wheelchairs, on crutches, pushing strollers etc. Things get particularly hazardous in the winter when the puddles freeze into slick sheets of ice.
Some pools are big and deep enough to persist for many days after it rains and tend to accumulate dirt and garbage and even start growing things. In addition to being inconvenient, it just adds to the feeling that city streets are dirty and unsightly.

I took most of these photos on my walk to work along 7th ave about a day after the last rain.
