Reducing the length of crosswalk and slowing down turning cars are two key components of safer crossings. 29% of pedestrian injuries and fatalities in New York City happen in the crosswalk with the walk sign. CB4 sponsored an engineering study of four intersections in Chelsea and Hell's kitchen and requires funding to implement at the following locations:
- 17th St: SW corner of 9th Avenue
- 25th St: SW corner of 9th Avenue
- 43rd St: NW corner of 9th Avenue
- 45th St: SW corner of 9th Avenue
Please describe why this project is important and who it will serve primarily
Thousands of school children, seniors and Fulton Houses residents would benefit from safer crossings : 17th and 45th streets have seen three fatalities in total due to turning vehicles. 25th street is near a school and Penn South, and 43rd Street is host to Manhattan Plaza with 2500 residents, many of which are aging in place.
