Install trees and bollards around NYPD stations to prevent parking on sidewalks
Targeted Agency:
NYC DOT
Project Name:
Sidewalk Beautification and Illegal Parking Mitigation
Description:
We should install planters with trees at every NYPD precinct in the city; between the planters we should install bollards to prevent any parking on the sidewalk. Nearly every NYPD precinct allows their members to park both personal and city vehicles on public sidewalks, despite the fact that this is illegal. Go to any station in the city and you will see cars parked on virtually every sidewalk. Trying to discuss the issue with officers at the precincts never goes anywhere. Complaints to 311 regularly get closed with no action taken and no investigation of the issue. Officers are neither incentivized nor interested in how their actions are negatively impacting their neighbors. There are no avenues left for NYC citizens to reclaim their sidewalks.
Need:
This project is important for all NYC residents to use public property that is currently being illegally and improperly used by the NYPD. The situation is a hazard (e.g., cars backing onto sidewalks as pedestrians walk by; cars blocking sidewalks so pedestrians must walk in the street instead) and a civil liberties issue for people with disabilities. Additionally, streets are never cleaned as alternate side parking rules are not enforced. This proposal would help beautify the streets and allow the city's citizens to make full use of the sidewalk whether walking, running, pushing a stroller, or using a wheelchair.
