Paradise Learning Garden
Be as specific as possible and include quantities when applicable (e.g. 5 security cameras, 10 laptop carts). Paradise Gardens is seeking to create an outdoor space for local residents and scholars to gather/volunteer and learn the basics of planting quality food/flowers and distributing seeds for South Jamaica residents to create and cultivate their own home gardens. it is the hope of Paradise Learning Gardens to create a hub of partnerships with local residents, professional partners, Community based organizations and district 28 schools at all levels to assist and volunteer in the day to day maintenance and care of the Paradise Learning Gardens. Paradise Learning Gardens would have the potential of serving as a platform for community service, internships and summer youth employment for area youth
Please describe why this project is important and who it will serve primarily
Southeast Queens remains a food desert with no access to fresh produce and healthy eating. Without a chance to consume quality food scholars and local residents are left without the ability to function at their best at school or work. The space at 107-29 Inwood St Jamaica NY 11435 has huge potential and with support of volunteers the space is in need of capital improvement in the form of a Drip irrigation and timer for flower beds, a fire hydrant for water connections. The site is well kept in the summer and would be used more by area residents and volunteers if it had a solar powered 'Grow House' that allows for recharging of tools and indoor planting and fellowship year round. Also, the site would benefit from a parking space for supply drop offs and safe passage for the handicap. Lastly, the street tends to be unsafe with speeding cars and the Garden would benefit from 2 speed bumps to slow traffic while keeping residents/volunteers and students safe (DOT/DPR).

Paradise is strategically located to provide much needed Green space, urban agriculture. It is not only good for the local economy and sustainability, but fosters a sense of identity and strength of character in a person. Growing food, preparing food, and eating food becomes the daily ritual of any Paradise gardener. The love that come from the simple act of providing food for others and sharing is something that I wish everyone could experience. To see the faces of our volunteers, youth, interns when they see the plants respond to care and also the lack of care. They learn a new respect for our environment. When our volunters, youths complete. They leave with knowledge and a new found commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and making the world a better place. The amazing ideas they have to offer to our garden, revitalizing the soil by introducing good microorganisms into the soil. The upgrades to Paradise will enable us to engage more family's, student, volunteers, interns.

Here at Paradise Community Garden I am an internship & am so proud of the work I have been able to do. I am only 17 years old & I have grown and developed skills at the garden that will remain with me forever. Sonia, the President of the garden has played a big role in that. Sonia is an inspiration, she has inspired me to always have drive & to be passionate about what I care about, just how she is with the garden. I have never seen anyone as passionate and dedicated to a project. Sonia cares so much about the garden & deserves all of the benefits she can be awarded. Paradise Community Garden is truly a welcoming community garden that welcomes everyone to learn & grow. When I first started at the garden, I had little to no knowledge about gardening. For example, I had no idea what winter gardening was! But I soon learned through Sonia & other gardeners the importance & possibility of winter gardening. This is one of many things that I have learned about gardening during my time here &
I am always eager to learn more. My mother and family around me believe that my time at the garden benefits me tremendously & they see that throughout the knowledge that I bring them after every shift I have. They encourage me to deepen my knowledge & push me out of my comfort zone. Starting out, I wasn’t too fond of gardening, but through Paradise Community Garden, it has become a safe space for me to connect with the environment & do my part in minimizing my carbon footprint. To begin with I wasn’t too fond of gardening but now I go any chance I get! A few other gardeners and myself even gathered on Thanksgiving Day & planted daffodils & we felt good being there! We spent the morning working & connecting with the garden & each other. Then later on, we went home & had great food. It was one of many amazing days that I have had at the Paradise Community Garden & I look forward to having many more!
Thank for you continued support. You have worn many hats since your arrival as a CCM/WLG worker, as a intern, and now as a YLC volunteer. You saw the potential and impact the garden had on you. Bravely jumped in and created our first Workshop for the community under the guidance of Master Composter, Gardener, YLC Facilitator Sacesha Bennett. You planted and reaped straight through 2021 winter and spring and now summer.
I enjoy gardening and when I found Paradise Community Garden I was glad to volunteer my time to help out. Any support that is given to the garden will be greatly appreciated.
I whole hearted support an idea that addresses the issue of food deserts, quality foods and education. Keep going!!!
I support this proposal. I have 4 children the 2 younger ones who think it is the best park. They love going to Paradise Community to plant and water and harvest their produce. It is exciting for the kids. Its really relaxing. We need the upgrades because it's hard to pull the hoses from the fire hydrant down the block. Our garden is doing great things in our community. It is a great place for all ages to learn to garden and compost. It has a food scrap drop off. This community would benefit from the upgrades. Our youths need the continued support and dedication of Green spaces like Paradise. It's a place for all ages. I totally support this proposal.
Paradise Garden is needed in our community for more reason than one. I usually take my scrapes to the garden on Saturdays. The interaction with Sonia, gardeners, and volunteers always welcomes you, with open arms and a wealth of information. The community is definitely needed to educate the young people. During my visits I have witnessed how inquisitive our youths are because they have so many interesting questions. Investment in this project will enhance our community.

Paradise is bringing peace and
prosperity back into our wreckless
neighborhood. I joined this past summer
and have grown exponentially from
Sonia's leadership and the opportunities
at the garden. We deserve to do more, tohelp many, and show people that
abundance is at their fingertips. Our resources are to your benefit, there's nothing we can't do with the help of the community.
Paradise has become part of my being and I will work with Sonia and all other supporters to see it flourish for the betterment of all.
Thank you for your continued to support. Because of you as a gardener, Master Composter, and YLC Facilitator Paradise is now able to welcome high school interns, paid work programs like SYEP and CCM and YLC.
I had never beem a gardener, but falling on the gem that is Paradise has helped me grow food, and be better making healthy choices. It is truly a paradise.
I definitely think this is deserved!
